SPANISH OPEN 2009
After successfully hosting the European Tour Final Qualifying School in November 2008 on both the Stadium and Tour Courses, top-class golf returned to PGA Golf Catalunya hosting the prestigious Spanish Open 2009, on the award-winning Stadium Course.
The Spanish Open 2009 was a success both in terms of participation by players of the stature of John Daly, Colin Montgomerie and Miguel Ángel Jiménez, and the turnout of over 40,000 spectators who came along to see a top European Tour event. At the end of an intense and dramatic tournament the winner of this prestigious event was Frenchman Thomas Levet with a score of 18 under par, two strokes ahead of the the second placed, Fabrizio Zanotti. Soren Hansen from Sweden had the distinction of shooting a course record 63 on day.
The Spanish Open 2000 had previously been held on the Stadium Course of PGA Catalunya Resort. It is considered one of the 10 best courses in Europe and was recently chosen as the 3rd best course in Continental Europe*
PGA Golf Catalunya has hosted also other great professional events such as the Sarazen World Open in October 1999, and the European Tour Qualifying School 2008 and 2009. Prestigious amateur tournaments included, among others, the Spanish International Men’s Absolute Championship, the Copa S. M. El Rey (The King’s Cup) in 2001 and the Spanish International Junior Boys’ Championship in 2007.
