Reigning PGA Champion Simon Khan warms up for May title defence at PGA Catalunya Resort
(Girona, Spain – March 28, 2011) PGA Catalunya Resort, Barcelona, ranked among the world’s top 100 golf courses for 2011, recently hosted the 2010 BMW PGA Championship winner Simon Khan, who will be defending his title later this year. The 2009 European Tour Qualifying School champion spent a week practising his strokes and shot selections, with three rounds over PGA Catalunya Resort’s famous and demanding Stadium Course, which he reported was in “great condition”. The Stadium Course recently underwent an extensive upgrade that included a switch from bentgrass to a bermuda bed overseeded with ryegrass on all its fairways, the same formula used by Augusta National for The Masters Tournament. Speaking about his rounds at the PGA Catalunya Resort to Miguel Girbes, the resort’s Golf Manager, Khan said “the greens, fairways and tee boxes were, as always, beautifully maintained.” He added that the holes on the Stadium Course, carved out of a pine forest, presented lots of tough challenges that offered good practice for his title defence at the PGA Championship – the European Tour’s flagship event – at Wentworth, UK, in May. He added: “I enjoyed playing PGA Catalunya’s Stadium Course. The precision and length off the tee required to shoot a good round here do test your patience and composure – key elements I’m sure will stand me in good stead given the challenge ahead. “There is no doubt that the PGA Catalunya Resort is a severe test of golf. With its large oak and evergreen trees lining the fairways and measuring 7200 yards it is a tough par 72.” The 37 year-old from Essex, who faced an uncertain future when he was forced to return to the European Tour Qualifying School in November 2009, confirmed his return to top form by producing the biggest final-day comeback in the history of the PGA Championship to win the 2010 event. A 20-foot birdie putt on the last hole, which curled round the back of the cup before toppling in, gave Khan the first prize of over £637,000 by a stroke from Ryder Cup star Luke Donald and Swede Fredrik Andersson Hed. His stunning five-under-par 66 brought him a five-year European Tour exemption and moved him 365 places up the Official World Golf Rankings.
